Is Social Media Necessary For A Blogger? | Chat with JBelkBooks

Random Quote of the Day: “That which costs little is less valued.” – Miguel de Cervantes

Hello sunshines!🔆 Lately on social media (specifically Twitter) I’ve been seeing a common theme — the blogger community is supportive and somewhat enjoying themselves one day, and then the next there is some issue about an author, a misrepresentation, etc.. And this leads to some big triumph that in the end influences individuals to leave our community or feel that they no longer belong.

Now this isn’t to give the blogger/reading Twitter community a bad name. In fact, there hasn’t been a time for me where I felt like I didn’t belong, despite my mini-hiatuses involving social media in general. But I have witnessed and read some tweets of fellow bloggers that they felt disconnected due to the drama, misunderstandings, and overall communications.

This instance does bring great discomfort to me as when I first started blogging and involving myself within the social media realm I felt we were all united in some form, especially within my mutuals — I was able to reach out to bloggers to get advice, I didn’t see much controversy between replies…Now this might be due to the fact that I am following new people now than I was earlier, but there is definitely a new “feel” going on within our community.

Now to the main question…

Image result for communication

In my opinion, there is no right or wrong answer to this question and I think it depends on the blogger themselves. Are you able to receive an audience without using other sources, such as social media, to spread awareness about your blog? Do you feel that it is beneficial to have other platforms to connect with a wider audience or your followers via your blog? These are questions that I think you should ask yourself before you decide to involve yourself into social media.

Personally, those two questions were the main reasons WHY I decided to join Twitter, Instagram, Goodreads, etc. I wanted a way to expand my blog and my audience, but also to find another way to reach different audiences and understand new perspectives about my favorite books, authors, and other interests. When I first started blogging and reading tips, one of the most consistent tips was to have social media outlets. But does having social media do more harm than anything?

When I mentioned that there is a new “feel” within our community, I sat back to think about that for a second. WHY does it seem that we are different? And the main reason that arose in my head was that NOW we have differences. NOW we have people reading #OwnVoices, new people SPEAKING UP about the LGBTQIA+ community, MORE people expressing their minds. And because of this we now have this newfound sense of controversy due to our difference of opinions.

Image result for rise up hamilton wallpaperI LOVE that individuals are beginning to speak their minds, especially when it’s for the greater good. I LOVE that I am able to find #OwnVoices trending or on my timeline. And I think it’s time to realize just how much our community has changed for the better. I’m not saying that we need to DISREGARD the ignorant individuals and those who hold different viewpoints, but we should continue to express what we believe in order to form a stronger community. There are millions of individuals on Twitter, Instagram, etc. that believe that representation of POC is important, millions that believe that we need more awareness involving #OwnVoices, the LGBTQIA+, the expansion of ARCs going around to those that take advantage of that opportunity…There are so many aspects of our community that are able to grow because WE speak up. Now, this can turn into a whole new conversation involving when is it right to speak your mind, when are you being disrespectful, and why this can turn into a negative, and I think that’s the main reason why our community is so different now. Because more individuals are willing to speak their minds, others are then responding (hopefully) positively, but also negatively; this is what sparks that fire that influences bloggers to feel that they don’t belong, that they don’t have others to coincide with…

I held a short poll thread via Twitter that will hopefully put everything I just said into a better perspective. I asked my following a series of questions that I presented within this post and asked if they could Retweet so I could have a wider audience. HERE ARE THE RESULTS:

90% responded YES to “Do you think social media is necessary for a blogger?”

94% responded YES to “Has social media benefited your blog in any way?”

72% responded YES to “Have you ever felt like you did not belong within the blogging/reading community?”

56% responded YES to “Do you think the blogging/reading community has changed negatively?”

To the question, “Why do you think social media is necessary for a blogger”, 10% said MORE STATS FOR BLOG, 15% said NEW FRIENDS/PERSPECTIVE, 71% said A COMBINATION OF FIRST TWO OPTIONS, and 4% said OTHER

Now that you’ve seen the stats, what do you think? Has social media benefited you more than harm? Do you think the blogging/reading has changed? If so, why? Chat with me in the comments! (After all, this is a DISCUSSION post!!) (:

1 Month ‘Till A New Year! [GIVEAWAY!!!] | November Wrap-Up

Random Fact of the Day: The average person walks the equivalent of twice around the world in a lifetime.

Hello sunshines! 🔆 Happy December 1st! It is slowly but surely reaching the end of 2016 and I’m really not sure how to feel about that! I honestly felt like just yesterday I started my 2016-2017 year of high school…But anyways, enough of the reminiscing, let’s break down what I accomplished (or didn’t accomplish) in the month of November!

MY RATING: 4 out of 5 stars

MY RATING: 3.5 out of 5 stars

MY RATING: 3.85 out of 5 stars

I had lots of time this Thanksgiving break to really paint, and it was refreshing to be able to do so! The very top painting is actually a painting over a painting — originally there was something else on that canvas, but then I covered it with white paint and created a new painting! As for the other two paintings, those are new editions 🎨

  • I exceeded 600 followers on Twitter! (:

And that is all for the month of November! November actually went by pretty fast, but I think that’s only because of Thanksgiving and the horrible fact that I was sick during the first half xD But anyways, here’s to an even BETTER December and a fantastic end to the year! 💘😌

Top Ten Tuesday [#21]

FullSizeRender (8)

Random Fact of the Day: There are more than 10 million bricks in the Empire State Building.

It is sooooo hot today in California! Even though today sucked because of the weather (I am more of a winter person), I am still here to post my Top Ten Tuesday. Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week I will post a new Top Ten List (may not necessarily be 10). This list includes a variety of topics such as ‘my top ten favorite authors’ or ‘my top ten books of the month’. The topics will change, so make sure you stay tuned for each week!

Just like last week, I am splitting this week’s topic in half…

Since I enjoy both Twitter and Youtube and there are some fantastic bookish people on both, I decided to do five each from Twitter and Youtube! Don’t get me wrong, there are a LOT more people that deserve some recognition, but these are the 10 that came into mind first!

  • Nori @ ReadWriteLove28: You may recognize this name from her blog, but if you don’t she is also on Twitter!! She was one of the first people to welcome my JBelkBooks Twitter account onto the interweb and she is amazingly friendly! She is always shouting out random bloggers and such and I think she is overall a great person.
  • CW @ readthinkponderThis wonderful person is also a blogger, so if you aren’t following her make sure you do! I have to shout her out because a long time ago when I needed advice about driving because I was extremely nervous, she shared her thoughts and I really appreciated that. Thank you again CW!! Check out her blog!

“Jesalin, I thought you were doing 5???” Yeah, well, I couldn’t find 5, lol. So the last 3 will be AWESOME POSSUM BLOGGERS!

  • Eve @ Eve Messenger’s Other-Word-ly Endeavors: If there could be only one blogger that I seriously don’t regret getting to know and following, it’s this awesome lady! If you don’t know Eve, if you don’t follow Eve, if you don’t GO OVER to Eve’s blog, you are seriously missing out on the best person ever. She is so, so, so awesome and I really enjoy interacting with her. I could go on and on, but if you want to know more about her feel free to check out my FWF with her. ❤
  • Lashaan & Trang @ Bookidote: Again, these two bloggers are muy importante (very important) & I love their humour and the overall positive and fun vibe they give off. I will never stop saying that they’re such an adorable couple (THAT BLOG TOGETHER LIKE WHAAA??? #goals) and of course, I love their blog’s content. Again, I posted a FWF with them as well, so you can find that here. ❤
  • Astra @ A Stranger’s Guide To NovelsIt is no surprise that I ALSO have a FWF post with her, so…yeah, lol. I love, love, looooveee Astra (and her name)! She is always in my notifications and I really do notice how much time she takes just to comment on my posts, so thank you Astra. ❤

  • Zoe @ readbyzoe: Zoe is definitely one of my favorite booktubers; she is funny, enjoys contemporary just like me, and I love the content she puts on Booktube all together.
  • Jesse @ jessethereader: Jesse is one of the only male booktubers that I subscribe to on Youtube, so he is very special. HAVE YOU SEEN HIS EDITING SKILLS??? Specifically on his Monthly Wrap-Ups, I love his creativity and his personality is so intriguing!
  • Regan @ PeruseProject: Ah, Regan. Regan is a close first favorite just because I always add more novels to my Goodreads TBR because of her! She always has the best novel recs and again, her personality is so silly & enjoyable — it’s hard NOT to like Regan, lol.
  • Jessica @ priceiswong: What do I love about Jessica? Well, even though she doesn’t have these AMAZING AND EXTRAVAGANT editing skills, she is still very solid and honest as a booktuber and I love how she provides this welcoming tone in her videos.
  • Sasha @ abookutopia: I think we are all aware of who Sasha is just because she is so well-known on Booktube. But if you don’t just go subscribe to her channel because like the other booktubers mentioned, her videos are very unique and I love her vlogs, lol.

Okay, so I couldn’t leave some of my other favorite booktubers hangin’, so here are some worthy recs that I absolutely couldn’t pass up:

  1. Hannah @ A Clockwork Reader
  2. Christine @ polandbananasBOOKS
  3. Jess @ Tiny Reads
  4. Alita @ Alita Joy
  5. Kat @ Katytastic
  6. Grace @ LovingDemBooks
  7. Laura @ LovelyLikeLaura
  8. Katie @ ChapterStackss
  9. Caz @ Little Book Owl
  10. Monica @ shemightbemonica

Everyone I mentioned today are equally amazing and so worth the acknowledgment. Like I said in the beginning, there are thousands and millions of other booktubers and bloggers and twitter users involved in the interweb, so if you are reading this now and you are one of those, shout yourself out in the comments!! Everyone deserves some recognition, so if you would like feel free self promo yourself in the comments 🙂

But other than that, that is ALL for today’s post. I would definitely love if you guys could link your posts down below so I can find new bloggers/twitter users/people in general that share the same passion as me.

Do you follow any of the people I mentioned? Who do you think I should’ve added to my list?

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time…

Following the Hype | Chat with JBelkBooks

I am really in the mood for some ice cream and hot chocolate.
Hello, friends! Today I am BACK with another Discussion Post to chat about Following the Hype.

So some of you may be asking, what is this sorcery called “HYPE”?” Well, in long terms short, it’s expressing extreme promotion or exaggeration towards a topic or idea. But in this case, I am talking about Book-ish Hype — reading the same books everyone else is, following only the ‘BEST’ blogs, etc. If you are Following the Hype, you may often find yourself asking, “Is everyone else doing this?” or “How would other people feel if I posted/read this?” And yes, it is sometimes challenging to give in to what others think or do. EVERYONE, at some point, wants to “fit in” and contribute to the commotion that goes around because being left out sucks. But is Following the Hype a positive or negative thing to uphold?

Let’s break it down, friends, with the Pros & Cons (of course, in my opinion):

  • You are always aware of what people are referring to. I say this especially in regards to social media because everyone on Twitter (specifically) usually makes references or “inside jokes” that relate to the newest books or authors. You’ll most likely understand what they are talking about which is pretty helpful in my opinion.
  • You are up-to-date on releases. Again, this ties in with the first bullet about knowing what others are talking about. If you didn’t read that newest release that everyone is raving about, you have nothing to say about it. Which also leads to my next bullet…
  • You will have something to contribute in a conversation. Since you read the book or you know about the author, you can talk with others about it. If you go to a bookish event, you know what you are talking about and you’ll probably have a better time.
  • You can make your own comments or opinions about the author/book. Going off of what other’s opinions probably won’t suit you well, so by reading the novel yourself, you’ll be able to understand what others are speaking of and see if you ultimately agree. I always love a good debate, lol.

OVERALL: You won’t feel left out & you’ll have a front row ticket onto the hype train, lol!

  • EVERYONE IS READING THE SAME THING AND THEREFORE PROBABLY POSTING THE SAME REVIEWS!! This is probably the main reason why I prefer not to Follow the Hype. I don’t know about you guys, but seeing the same reviews on my feed is sometimes overwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, more opinions the better. But not when they are all saying the same things… I don’t know, this one varies.
  • There is no variety. In regards to blogs, I like to see more than Young Adult reviews. Again, this may be just a preference point of view.
  • You may come off as biased ESPECIALLY if you are “friends” with the author or something of that sort. Some people know how to cover up their biasedness, and others don’t. Repeating the same concept as others can get repetitive and people may start to realize that what you are saying may just be because everyone else is voicing the same thing — again & AGAIN, preference and personality are key.

OVERALL: You/your blog may be viewed differently & the level of uniqueness is kind of ‘eh’.

That’s actually all I can think of, lol. But anyways, so what’s your verdict? I personally believe that even though I don’t have a lot of Cons listed, that the Pros and Cons are 50/50. I think this subject is based off of pure opinion and personal preferences. Just because you Follow the Hype it doesn’t mean that you are dishonest or something like that. But on the other hand, it is the same for if you DON’T Follow the Hype — reading the same novels, following the same blogs, etc. doesn’t mean that your blog is less worthy or that what you are reading is invalid. Variety and uniqueness is very important to me when I come across blogs, so that’s my main purpose for not completely Following the Hype.

However, there is nothing wrong with being on either side, but like I said there are downfalls to both. I think that I am mostly in the “middle” because I like to read what others are reading just to see what I think about it and to express my own opinions. But I also like to read outside my comfort zone, find other blogs that don’t just post YA reviews, and just being different in general. I do confess that sometimes I do question what I’m reading because I don’t know if anyone will be interested in my review, but then I question myself again because WHO CARES what others think?? Your blog is for YOU, so post what you want to post and read what you want to read.

Overall, this is my message in the words of Haruki Murakami — I could not have said it better than this:

I could go on and on about this topic because it is sort of vague, but NOW I WANT TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS! What is your definition of Following the Hype? Do you hop on the Hype Train when it comes? How do you feel about those who DON’T read the newest releases? Chat with me down below in the comments!!

Thanks for reading & I’ll see you next time…

Feature with Followers | #10

FullSizeRender (34)

Hello, hello, and welcome to another Feature with Followers post!

Feature with Followers is a weekly meme created by JBelkBooks (me) where I will be showcasing one of my AMAZING followers. This gives me an opportunity to really get to know them and give them an opportunity to get their blogs out there in the community. The way I choose my featured follower is Top Secret, so wait for your chance to be featured!

Today I am sharing two lovely bloggers that post on one single blog. These wonderful followers have actually been with my blog for a long time, so thank you to them!! Here are some hints on who this week’s FwF could be:

  • they are both female bloggers
  • the two have been blogging for more than 3 years (#bloggoals!!!)

Briana & Krysta @ Pages Unbound!!!

Pages Unbound Button

ABOUT BRIANA: Briana is currently a grad student in English literature. When she’s not reading or writing about the things she’s read, she likes to dance, make cupcakes, or watch Doctor Who.

ABOUT KRYSTA:  Krysta, as might be supposed, has loved reading as long as she can remember, enjoying anything from classic literature to middle grade fantasy.  When not buried in a book, she enjoys baking, drinking tea, and watching period dramas.

And now onto the chat/interview process where I asked Briana & Krysta some questions!

ME: When did your guys’ blogging journey begin and why did you decide to start?

BRIANA & KRYSTA: We started blogging in May 2011 as a way to talk to other readers about books.  We were co-bloggers from the beginning, and it’s been a great five and a half years!

[You guys have been blogging for so long!! Congrats! :)]

ME: What do you each find is most challenging as a blogger?

BRIANA: Keeping up with everything can be challenging, especially since I’m currently in school, working, and interning!

KRYSTA:  Finding time to read, to write meaningful posts, and to comment on other blogs is always my biggest issue.

[I definitely agree & relate to both Krysta & Briana. Keeping up with life is already hard, but also having time to read, post, and comment is adding to the challenge. But I guess you could say it’s worth it…]

ME: Besides reading and blogging, what else do you do with your spare time?

BRIANA: I like crafting and baking!  You can see some of the cards and other crafts we’ve made on our Pinterest.

KRYSTA: I like to begin learning languages, walk around town taking photographs, and find new recipes to try.

[Oh, that is so unique! I’ll definitely be checking out your Pinterest soon!]

ME: Would you rather read ONLY the first page of a book or read ONLY the last page of a book?

BRIANA: Only the last page!  It’s satisfying to know how everything wraps up, and then I could just make up the story that led to that point for myself.

KRYSTA: Only the first page.  Then I could make up the rest of the story myself!

ME: Since it is the beginning of a new year, can you each share a 2016 resolution? (book related, life related, blog related, etc.)

BRIANA: This year, I want to post more thoughtful discussions on the blog and write things that will get our readers talking.

KRYSTA: Procrastinate less.  If I get around to it.

[Me too, lol.]

As you can tell these two ladies are very diverse & very intelligent. I didn’t know they had a Pinterest account, so like I said, I’ll be checking that out soon. I love how they both have their own hobbies besides reading & blogging, which makes them & their blog twice as awesome! Oh, and I did want to mention that their review section is very wide-ranged — from movies, to novels, to TV shows..I definitely think you should check it out! 🙂

You can find Briana & Krysta on any of the social media listed below. Just click on the icon and it’ll take you straight to their profile!

Thank you a bunch to both, Briana & Krysta, again, for taking the time to chat with me and share yourselves more with the blogging community. I enjoyed talking with both of you a little bit and getting to know you more as a person and as a blogger.

Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time…
