Random Fact of the Day: An adult giraffe’s tongue is 17 inches long.
Hello sunshines! As we know more and more debut authors are arising this year, and therefore it is always a great pleasure to be able to share a few of them with you guys!
A few weeks ago Tiffany McDaniel, debut author of The Summer That Melted Everything, contacted me about reading & reviewing her novel. But during that time I wasn’t accepting review copies just because I already had so many piling up, along with some other circumstances. With McDaniel’s kind heart, she still allowed me to hold an interview with her regarding her novel and herself, so that is what I am sharing with you all today!
ABOUT TIFFANY MCDANIEL:
An Ohio native, Tiffany McDaniel’s writing is inspired by the rolling hills and buckeye woods of the land she knows. She is also a poet, playwright, screenwriter, and artist. The Summer that Melted Everything is her debut novel.
Q&A WITH MCDANIEL
ME: Tell us a little about yourself!
MCDANIEL: I’m an Ohio poet and novelist who jams out to Imagine Dragons with real dragons.
ME: What inspired you to create your debut novel, The Summer that Melted Everything?
MCDANIEL: I always say what inspires me are the characters themselves. This novel is their story. They inspire, demand even, that I tell their story as authentically and as honestly as I can. As an author, I owe that to the characters, but more than that, I owe that to the readers.
ME: If there is one idea or theme that you would like your readers of your debut novel to recognize, what would it be and why?
MCDANIEL: That sometimes the things that melt in our lives, do so by our own flames and only we can put the fire out. The water to do so is always right there. We just have to be willing to reach for it.
ME: What are you working on at the moment?
MCDANIEL: I have eight other novels completed. Currently I’m working on my ninth novel. The novel I hope to follow The Summer that Melted Everything up with is When Lions Stood as Men. It’s a story of a Jewish brother and sister who escape Nazi Germany, cross the Atlantic Ocean, and end up in Ohio of all places. Struggling with the guilt of surviving the Holocaust, they create their own sort of camp where they punish themselves, realizing in the end it was each other they truly had to survive.
Fielding Bliss has never forgotten the summer of 1984: the year a heat wave scorched Breathed, Ohio. The year he became friends with the devil.
Sal seems to appear out of nowhere – a bruised and tattered thirteen-year-old boy claiming to be the devil himself answering an invitation. Fielding Bliss, the son of a local prosecutor, brings him home where he’s welcomed into the Bliss family, assuming he’s a runaway from a nearby farm town.
When word spreads that the devil has come to Breathed, not everyone is happy to welcome this self-proclaimed fallen angel. Murmurs follow him and tensions rise, along with the temperature as an unbearable heat wave rolls into town right along with him. As strange accidents start to occur, riled by the feverish heat, some in the town start to believe that Sal is exactly who he claims to be. While the Bliss family wrestles with their own personal demons, a fanatic drives the town to the brink of a catastrophe that will change this sleepy Ohio backwater forever.

“Madness. The compassing violin when in our head, the directionless chaos when out of it. Isn’t that what madness is, after all? Clarity to the beholder, insanity to the witnessing world. My God, what madness this world has witnessed. What beautiful, chaotic madness.”—THE SUMMER THAT MELTED EVERYTHING
