Captivating Covers [#4]

Aloha, fellow bloggers! This week’s Captivating Cover was discovered a little more than two days ago. I came across it on Goodreads and I had to make sure I shared it with you guys today!

When you first look at this image, what do you see? You probably thought the book lying flat was the actual book, but it really isn’t…This is a book inside of a book cover! Now if you aren’t completely satisfied with this cover, maybe the second version of this book will suite you better…

Both of these editions of Simon Critchley’s The Book of Dead Philosophers are amazingThe first cover has such a great meaning behind it; not only is there a book inside of a book, but the novel is lying flat because it’s supposed to depict a tombstone (hence the title). Also, the second edition was uniquely executed (hence the title, again) and I enjoyed them both very much. This would definitely be a novel that I would just pick up because of the cover.

If you are interested in the background of this novel, read more to find out!

Synopsis from Goodreads:

“To philosophize is to learn how to die.” —Cicero; assassinated by order of Mark Antony

“One who no longer is cannot suffer.” —Lucretius; suicide, allegedly driven mad by a love potion

“Life is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.” —Hobbes; died in bed, age 91

In this collection of brief lives (and deaths) of nearly two hundred of the world’s greatest thinkers, noted philosopher Simon Critchley creates a register of mortality that is tragic, amusing, absurd, and exemplary. From the self-mocking haikus of Zen masters on their deathbeds to the last words of Christian saints and modern-day sages, this irresistible book contains much to inspire both amusement and reflection.

Informed by Critchley’s acute insight, scholarly intelligence, and sprightly wit, each entry tells its own tale, but collected together they add up to a profound and moving investigation of meaning and the possibility of happiness for us all.

Let me know down below in the comments your favorite edition of the cover and your overall thoughts of today’s Captivating Cover!
